MEASUREMENT AND EVALUATION OF PERFORMANCE PROPERTIES OF SELECTED LOCALLY PRODUCED LUBRICANT (SHEA BUTTER AND CASHEW OIL)

Abstract

This study focuses on the measurement and evaluation of performance properties of selected locally produced lubricants, specifically shea butter and cashew oil. The research aims to explore the potential of these indigenous oils as viable alternatives to conventional petroleum-based lubricants. The performance properties investigated include viscosity, thermal stability, oxidative stability, wear resistance, and lubrication efficiency.

A series of standardized tests were conducted to compare the properties of shea butter and cashew oil with those of commercial lubricants. The results indicated that both shea butter and cashew oil exhibit commendable viscosity indices and thermal stability, making them suitable for applications under varying temperature conditions. Oxidative stability tests showed that these natural oils have a relatively high resistance to oxidation, which is crucial for long-term storage and usage.

Wear resistance tests, conducted using a four-ball tribometer, revealed that shea butter and cashew oil provide adequate lubrication, reducing friction and wear between moving parts. The lubrication efficiency was further assessed through a series of engine performance tests, demonstrating that these oils can effectively reduce engine wear and improve fuel efficiency.

In conclusion, the findings of this study suggest that locally produced shea butter and cashew oil possess significant potential as eco-friendly and sustainable lubricants. Their use could not only reduce dependency on imported petroleum-based lubricants but also promote local agricultural industries. Further research is recommended to optimize the formulation and enhance the performance properties of these natural lubricants for broader industrial applications.

This has spurred interest in the exploration and development of sustainable and eco-friendly alternatives. Shea butter and cashew oil, both locally produced in many regions of Africa, including Nigeria, present promising alternatives due to their biodegradability, availability, and potential performance properties.

Shea butter, extracted from the nuts of the shea tree (Vitellaria paradoxa), is well-known for its applications in the cosmetic and food industries. Similarly, cashew oil, derived from cashew nuts (Anacardium occidentale), has various uses, including in food and cosmetics. However, their potential as lubricants has not been extensively explored or scientifically validated. This study aims to bridge this gap by evaluating the performance properties of shea butter and cashew oil as lubricants, comparing their efficacy with conventional petroleum-based lubricants.

The reliance on petroleum-based lubricants poses several environmental and economic challenges. 1.3 Objectives of the Study

The primary objectives of this study are:
