A REVIEW OF EFFECT OF THREE TYPES OF FEEDS OF LATING HEN ON PRODUCTION
Abstract
The quality and quantity of feed significantly influence the productivity of laying hens. This study examines the effect of three different types of feeds on the egg production performance of laying hens. The research was conducted using a sample of laying hens divided into three groups, each receiving a distinct type of feed formulated to meet their nutritional needs. Key performance indicators such as egg production rate, egg weight, feed conversion ratio, and overall hen health were monitored over a defined period. Data analysis was conducted using statistical tools to determine variations in production output among the three feed types. The findings revealed significant differences in egg production across the three feed groups, highlighting the impact of specific nutritional compositions on hen productivity. The study concludes that an optimized feed formulation can enhance egg production efficiency, reduce feed wastage, and improve profitability in poultry farming. The results provide valuable insights for poultry farmers and animal nutritionists seeking to maximize productivity through effective feed management.
CHAPTER ONEINTRODUCTION
1.1 Background to the StudyPoultry farming is a vital component of the agricultural sector, contributing significantly to food security, employment, and economic development worldwide (FAO, 2020). Among various poultry enterprises, egg production from laying hens remains a crucial aspect due to the high demand for eggs as a source of protein. The efficiency of egg production is largely influenced by the quality and type of feed provided to laying hens (Olomu, 2019).
The nutritional composition of feed plays a fundamental role in determining the productivity, health, and profitability of poultry farming (Afolayan & Osho, 2018). Feeding strategies influence key production parameters, such as egg-laying rate, shell quality, feed conversion ratio, and overall bird health (Smith et al., 2021). Different feed formulations exist, varying in protein, energy, vitamin, and mineral content. The selection of an appropriate feed type ensures optimal egg production and enhances economic sustainability in poultry farming (Adeyemi & Hassan, 2020). However, the challenge remains in determining the most suitable feed formulation that maximizes productivity while minimizing costs (Eze et al., 2017).
This study evaluates the effects of three different types of feeds on the production performance of laying hens. By examining the relationship between feed types and egg production, this research aims to provide poultry farmers with insights into optimizing feeding strategies for improved efficiency and profitability.
1.2 Statement of the ProblemPoultry farmers often face difficulties in selecting the best feed formulation for maximizing egg production and maintaining hen health. Suboptimal feed choices can result in reduced egg-laying performance, poor egg quality, and increased production costs (Adebayo & Ogunlade, 2018). Given the diversity of commercial feed types available, there is a need for scientific validation of the most effective feed formulation for laying hens (Ajibade & Usman, 2019). This study seeks to bridge this gap by assessing the impact of three different feed types on the production output of laying hens.
1.3 Objectives of the StudyThe main objective of this study is to evaluate the effect of three different types of feeds on the production performance of laying hens. Specifically, the study aims to:
Compare the egg production rates among hens fed with three different feed types.
Assess the impact of feed type on the feed conversion ratio (FCR) of laying hens.
Determine the effect of feed type on egg quality parameters such as shell strength, weight, and yolk color.
Provide recommendations on the most suitable feed type for optimal egg production.
1.4 Research QuestionsThis study seeks to answer the following research questions:
How do different types of feeds affect the egg production rate of laying hens?
What is the relationship between feed type and feed conversion efficiency?
Does feed type influence the quality of eggs produced?
Which feed type yields the best economic returns for poultry farmers?
1.5 Research HypothesesThe following null hypotheses will be tested:
H0₁: There is no significant difference in egg production rates among hens fed with different feed types.H0₂: Feed type has no significant effect on feed conversion ratio.H0₃: Feed type does not significantly affect egg quality parameters.
1.6 Significance of the StudyThe findings from this research will be beneficial to poultry farmers, animal nutritionists, and agricultural policymakers. Poultry farmers can use the insights gained to make informed decisions on feed selection for better productivity and cost management (Ogundipe & Bello, 2021). Additionally, feed manufacturers can leverage the results to enhance the nutritional composition of commercial poultry feeds. The study will also contribute to the existing body of knowledge in poultry nutrition and agricultural development.
1.7 Scope of the StudyThis study focuses on evaluating the effect of three different types of feeds on the production performance of laying hens. The research will be conducted in a selected poultry farm, with data collected over a specific period. Key parameters such as egg production rate, feed conversion ratio, and egg quality will be measured and analyzed.
1.8 Limitations of the StudyCertain limitations may affect the study, including environmental factors, genetic variation among birds, and possible inaccuracies in data collection. Additionally, variations in feed composition and availability may influence results. However, appropriate control measures will be implemented to minimize these challenges.
1.9 Operational Definition of Terms
Laying Hens: Female chickens that have reached maturity and are capable of producing eggs.
Feed Conversion Ratio (FCR): The efficiency with which feed is converted into egg production, calculated as feed intake divided by egg weight produced.
Egg Quality: The physical and nutritional characteristics of eggs, including shell strength, weight, yolk color, and albumen quality.
Poultry Nutrition: The study and practice of feeding poultry to ensure optimal health and productivity.
Commercial Feeds: Manufactured feed formulations designed to meet the dietary requirements of poultry.
