THE EFFECTS OF LACK OF QUALIFIED TEACHERS IN PERFORMANCE OF STUDENTS IN MATHEMATICS

ABSTRACT

This research work among its aim is to find out the effect of shortage of qualified teacher on students’ academic performance. The quality of education of a nation could be determined by the quality of her teacher. Teacher are recognized as the main pillars of educational system, it is pertinent to mention that influence and poor teaching of some key subject e.g Mathematics, English Language, etc in the school curriculum do some havoc by shattering the hope and aspiration of most students, especially the very ambitious ones. In this research, the sample comprised 2 selected schools in Agbado, Ogun. In the light of this, the data analysis techniques used was simple percentage, this was calculated and used to answer the research questions. On the basis of the results, conclusion and recommendations were drawn from the study that shortage of teachers have negative effect on students. At the end of this research work, recommendations were made that government should provide more training facilities for teachers in our institution of high learning so as to produce adequate number of qualified teachers for our secondary schools, teachers posting should take cognizance of qualified teacher’s area of specialization.

INTRODUCTION

1.1 BACKGROUND TO THE STUDY

The aim of education is to provide knowledge that will integrate individual and move them into more meaningful individual in the society capable to solving their problems. Teachers have been seen as an effective instrument towards achieving effective teaching.

The quality of education of a nation could be determined by the quality of her teacher. Teacher are recognized as the main pillars of educational system, it is pertinent to mention here that influence and poor teaching of some key subject e.g Mathematics, English Language, etc in the school curriculum to do some havoc by shattering the hope and aspiration of most students, especially the very ambitious ones.

The important factors in improving student performance of achieving in some key subjects is by employing seasoned qualified teachers in all school. Abe and Adu (2013). Okuruwa (2009) found that, policy investment on quality of teacher is related to improvement in students’ performance. Most students have desired to become specialist in field of knowledge but could not make the grade in basic examination that should have given them entry into higher education such as the university.

The effort made by government federation to increase the supply of qualified teacher of so as to reduce lack of qualified teacher and its efforts on the academic performance on student will lead to poor performance of student.

The Bachelor Degree in education was introduces in almost all Nigeria university in the bid to provide most trained teachers for effective teaching and learning which in turn the performance of student in both urban and rural areas. College whose programme were modified and enriched in given way to a new certificate, National certificate of Education (NCE). These provide the trained teachers for lower form of secondary school and teachers training college.

George (2004) attributes poor performance of some key subject e.g Mathematics to teachers qualification inadequacy of materials as well as administrative factors.

In view of these, a teacher is one who has been expose to a good measure of training in a teaching subject area as well as professional education. Such professionally qualified teachers may according to the federation ministry of education (2004) fall into the number of academic performance categories. Fajonyomi (2007) in his study, remarked that the success of any educational enterprise depends largely on the availability of professional teachers

Mkpa (2007) regarded the trained teachers as someone who underwent and completed education in formal teachers training institution or in planned programme of training.

Lillis (2008) explains good teachers are those who give student what they need and not measure on qualification. Furrugia (2007) perceived a professional teacher as one who possesses professioanally based knowledge in the theory and practice of education in the belief that he/she is making an important contribution to the society, cultural and economic development of he/she country.

Adieze (2006) he emphasized on the non qualified and non-professional are killing the profession because they are not really teachers. He regarded them as “bird” of passage that create unnecessary vacuum whenever, they see greener pasture and better prospect in the profession they are originally trained for.

Academically, qualified teachers refer to those who have academic training as a result of enrolment into educational institution and obtained qualification such as HND, B.Sc, B.A etc while professionally qualified teachers that gave them profession knowledge, skills, techniques, aptitudes as different from general education (Edu and Kalu 2012)

Ukeje (2008) he submitted that the defects of present Nigeria educational system are partly as a result of teachers with poor qualification. For him the real value of a sound education principle lies in its effective implementation and in the final analysis. It is the teacher who translates theory into practices. In his words, the quality of school and that of teaching personnel can create a vicious circle for we cannot have good teacher unless we have good school to produce them. And we cannot have good school unless we have god teacher.

One of the problems has been inequitable posting of teachers in favour of our urban secondary/primary schools. Since the communities have been encouraged by the government to build neighborhood secondary/primary school. It is only fair that adequate manpower and infrastructure should be provided in all schools and their place of location.

1.2 Statement of the Problems

In Agbado Ogun State the option is that the posting of teachers to various secondary/primary schools varies and meanwhile more qualified teachers were being posted more to the urban secondary/primary school, more than that in the rural area of the state.

The problem resulting from the shortage of qualified teacher to our secondary/primary is the poor performance which arise in rural area school in particularly.

Students from the rural areas are suffer backwardness and failure as a result of unqualified teacher posting in the school.

For these reasons, the research tends to examine the effect of shortage of teachers on the academic performance of the affected schools in Agbado Ogun State.

1.3 Purpose of the Study

The study is generally to identify the effect of shortage of qualified teachers on the academic performance of students in Agbado Ogun State.

The study specifically seeks to find out the extent these shortage of qualified of teachers affects students’ performances.

And also what measure could be adopted to enhance the academic performance of students.

1.4 Significant of the Study

The significance may varies for the fact that the result is going to provide necessary information to state and federal government of Nigeria, teachers policy makes etc on the effect of shortage of qualified teachers to the school this study when completed will contribute some knowledge which may be of help to the state and federal government to make policy that will help curb the high rate of shortage of qualified teachers in our country.

The study will provide the general public with information on the important of training people who are capable of offering the best to in our various schools. And why it is good to employ only the professional (N.C.E) National Certification in Education and degree holder to our secondary/primary schools.

Finally the project when completed will provide the public and mostly the teachers on the best way to take in order to avoid half back teachers.

1.5 Scope of Study

The study is centred on some secondary/primary schools in Agbado Ogun State. It is limited to effect of shortage of qualified teacher on academic performance of students

The following assumptions stand as the research questions of the study

1. To what extent does shortage of qualified teachers affect student academics?

2. To what extent does the imbalance in distribution of teachers affect academic performance of students?

3. To what extent does the student performance in basic examination?

4. What measure could be adopted to enhance the academic performance of students?
