ANALYSIS OF NIGERIA ENERGY VENDOR BILLING SYSTEMS

ABSTRACT

Consumers as well as suppliers of electric energy in Nigeria found it difficult to decide which of the two metering systems currently in use is beneficial economically. Usually, the energy vendor compares the revenues accruing before and after the commencement of the prepaid metering system.(Energy commission of Nigeria,2003). There is need to know whether the new system should be pursued beyond the pilot stage in order to have resources for infrastructure upgrading, among other things.

The pattern and nature of relationship between the amount of power vended and the revenue generated by each of the eight [8] Business Districts in the power distribution zone in Lagos were modelled and analysed using linear regression analysis. The revenue and energy vended between January 2004 when the Pre-Paid (PP) meter was introduced, and April 2010 was analysed using Ordinary Least Square regression (OLS).

The result showed that there has been gradual increase in both energy billed and revenue received during the period with sharp drops around July of each year due to the usual problem associated with hydropower plants.  The result also showed relative increase in per unit of power consumed and revenue generated during the period with the use of pre-paid meter than with the old billing system.

It can be concluded that pre-paid metering system brings in more revenue due to reduction in energy theft and other malpractices embedded in the old billing system.
