COMMUNICATION SYSTEM AND STAFF PERCEPTION OF COMMUNICATION IN AHMADU BELLO UNIVERSITY ZARIA
ABSTRACT
Communication as a process intended for conveying information, instructions, advice, feelings, opinions and facts correctly and accurately from one person to another or groups of people is a central concept in university administration. This study is a first attempt aimed at critically assessing the existing communication system in Ahmadu Bello University to ascertain the extent it is adequate or not; to what extent the techniques employed are modern or out-dated: and to make appropriate recommendations. The study is about communication systems in Ahmadu Bello University. It covers the period of 26 years, i.e. since the inception of Ahmadu Bello University up to 1988. The sample studied is chosen from faculty of administration, the registry and the main library. The purpose was to ensure that the academic, professional, administrative, intermediate and junior staff were represented.
Data for the study was obtained mainly through questionnaires and official documents. The major findings of the study are that:
1. University official publications are useful to the academic, professional, administrative, intermediate and junior staff. However, most of them do not possess copies because they have never been given one.
Consequences of non-possession of copies of publications are largely ignorance of their contents and nonchalant attitude towards them.
Channels and contents of communication identified include:
i. Communication from boss to subordinates is mostly written instructions, advice, orders and reprimands in that order.
ii. communication between colleagues is mostly oral advice, instructions and caution.
iii. communication from subordinates to the boss consists mainly of oral information given any time they believe that the boss needs it.
iv. communication that subordinates use for dayto-day function comes mostly from the boss, colleagues in the same department, colleagues in other departments and intermediate and junior staff regulations, in that order,
v. most senior staff obtain knowledge for conditions of service from the regulations governing appointment of senior staff at Ahmadu Bello University,
vi. most intermediate and junior staff obtain knowledge for on-coming events from the Bulletin.
