EFFECTS OF IRRIGATION LEVELS AT DIFFERENT STAGES OF GROWTH AND SOWING DATE ON THE GROWTH, YIELD AND MALTING QUALITY OF BARLEY (Hordeum v u l g a r e L.)

ABSTRACT

A f i e l d experiment was conducted under i r r i g a t i on a t the I r r i g a t i o n Research S t a t i o n , Kadawa, in the Sudan savanna e c o l o g i c a l zone of n o r t h e r n N i g e r ia d u r i n g the 1986/87 dry season to study the e f f e c t s of d i f f e r e n t i r r i g a t i o n l e v e l s at d i f f e r e n t s t a g e s of growth and sowing date on the growth, y i e l d and m a l t i n g q u a l i ty of b a r l e y (Hordeurn v u l g a r e L . ). The t r e a t m e n t s c o n s i s t e d of four i r r i g a t i o n l e v e ls (optimum i r r i g a t i o n water throughout growth p e r i o d, 50% optimum water at the v e g e t a t i v e stage only, 50% optimum water at the r e p r o d u c t i v e s t a g e only and 50% optimum water throughout growth p e r i o d ) using IW/CPE r a t i o ; and t h r e e sowing d a t e s (early-November, l a t e – November and mid-December), B a r l e y s u p p l i e d with optimum i r r i g a t i o n water throughout growth p e r i o d produced the h i g h e s t g r a in y i e l d of 3209 kg/ha which was reduced by about 30, 23 and 48% when 50% optimum water was withheld at the v e g e t a t i v e s t a g e , r e p r o d u c t i v e s t a g e and throughout growth p e r i o d , r e s p e c t i v e l y . All growth p a r a m e t e r s, y i e l d components and WUE were h i g h e s t when the crop was s u p p l i e d optimum i r r i g a t i o n water throughout. However, t h e g r a i n p r o t e i n content was lowest when p l a n t s were s u p p l i e d optimum water throughout, while withholding 50% i r r i g a t i o n water throughout growth r e s u l t e d in the highest grain protein content. Similarly, a l l growth parameters, yield and yield components and WUE were highest with late-November sowing, but grain protein content was lowest compared to early-November and mid- December sowings. The interaction was significant on number of spikes per square meter, length of spike, number of grains per spike, grain yield, straw yield and grain protein content. Most of the parameters measured were significantly and positively correlated to grain yield. Grain protein content was however, negatively correlated to grain yield.
