EFFECT OF TRANSPLANTING DATE, PLANT POPULATION AND NITROGEN ON THE GROWTH AND YIELD OF GARDEN EGG (Solan um gilo VARIETY WHITE LIGHT

ABSTRACT

An experiment was carried out during 1989 wet season at the Horticultural Field Unit of the Institute for Agricultural Research, Samaru, Zaria, to study the effects of two transplantings dates (5th July 1909 and 26th July 1989), three planting densities (20,000, 40,000 and 60,000 plants/ha) and four nitrogen levels (0, 30, 60 and 90 kg N/ha) on the growth and yield of garden egg. Transplanting on 5th July 1989 significantly increased number of leaves per plant and fruit diameter while fruit yield per plant, leaf area index and total dry weight per plant were significantly decreased. The rest of the parameters tested were not significantly influenced by transplanting on different dates. Increasing plant population significantly decreased stem diameter, number of branches per- plant, number of leaves per plant, plant leaf spread, leaf dry weight, stem dry weig/nt and total dry weight. Similarly, fruit fresh weight, fruit dry weight and number of fruits were significantly decreased with increase in plant population. Number of leaves per m2, leaf area index, fruit dry weight per plot and total yield per hectare were however, significantly increased with increase in plant population. Nitrogen application significantly increased all the growth and yield parameters measured over the control in all the weeks studied. Fruit fresh weight, fruit dry weight per plant. Fruit dry weight per plot and total yield per hectare were progressively increased each additional 30 kg N/ha up to 90 kg N/ha. Total fruit yield per hectare was significantly increased from 4.19 tons in the control to 7.37. 9.98 and 11.55 tons by the application of 30, 60 and 90 kg M/ha respectively which correspond to 76,133 and 175% inoreasa owr the control respectively. Significant interactions were recorded between the factors on most of the parameters tested. Similarly, significant and positive correlation was obtained between fruit yield nd all parameters tested except number of days to 50%flowering which was negatively correlated with fruit yield.
