Abstract:
This study presents a comprehensive approach to the design and development of a geospatial database and associated software for web mapping, focusing on the rich spatio-historical information pertaining to cultural routes in Zimmi Town, situated within the Pujehun District of Sierra Leone. The project addresses the critical need to preserve and promote the cultural heritage of the region, while also facilitating tourism and socio-economic development.
Through a combination of field surveys, archival research, and community engagement, historical data related to cultural routes, landmarks, and significant events are collected and organized. Utilizing Geographic Information Systems (GIS) technology, a robust geospatial database schema is designed to efficiently manage this complex dataset, incorporating spatial and temporal dimensions to capture the dynamic nature of cultural heritage.
Furthermore, software tools are developed to enable web-based mapping applications, allowing users to explore, visualize, and interact with the spatio-historical information of cultural routes. These applications are designed with user-friendly interfaces, supporting features such as layered maps, multimedia content integration, and customizable search functionalities to enhance user experience and accessibility.
