CHOLERA AS A PUBLIC HEALTH PROBLEM-INVESTIGATING THE ROLE OF HEALTHCARE SYSTEM PREVENTION OF CHOLERA IN AKUKO TORU LGA OF RIVERS STATE
Abstract
Cholera remains a significant public health challenge, particularly in regions with inadequate water and sanitation infrastructure. This study examines the role of the healthcare system in preventing cholera outbreaks in Akuku Toru Local Government Area (LGA) of Rivers State, Nigeria. Despite ongoing efforts, cholera persists due to a combination of environmental, socio-economic, and systemic factors.
The research employs a mixed-methods approach, integrating quantitative data from healthcare records and qualitative insights from interviews with healthcare providers, local government officials, and community members. The study focuses on assessing the effectiveness of existing cholera prevention strategies, including public health education, water treatment initiatives, and rapid response mechanisms during outbreaks.
Findings indicate that while there are significant efforts to prevent cholera, gaps remain in the implementation of sustainable water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) practices. The study highlights the critical role of healthcare infrastructure, timely disease surveillance, and community engagement in mitigating cholera risks. However, challenges such as insufficient funding, limited access to clean water, and inadequate public awareness hinder the effectiveness of these interventions.
The study concludes with recommendations to enhance the healthcare system’s capacity to prevent cholera, emphasizing the need for integrated approaches that combine robust public health education, improved WASH infrastructure, and strengthened healthcare services. These measures are essential for reducing the incidence of cholera and improving public health outcomes in Akuku Toru LGA.
