ROLE OF EOSINOPHILIS IN ALLERGIC AND AUTOIMMUNE DISORDERS
ABSTRACT
Eosinophils, a type of white blood cell, are traditionally associated with allergic responses and parasitic infections. Recent research, however, has highlighted their significant role in the pathogenesis of various allergic and autoimmune disorders. In allergic diseases such as asthma, allergic rhinitis, and atopic dermatitis, eosinophils contribute to tissue inflammation, mucosal damage, and airway hyperresponsiveness through the release of cytotoxic granules, cytokines, and chemokines. Similarly, in autoimmune disorders, eosinophils have been implicated in promoting inflammation and tissue injury, exacerbating conditions like eosinophilic esophagitis and certain forms of vasculitis. This review explores the multifaceted roles of eosinophils in the immune system, emphasizing their contributions to disease pathology and potential as therapeutic targets. Understanding the mechanisms by which eosinophils influence allergic and autoimmune responses may lead to novel strategies for diagnosing and treating these complex conditions.
