PATTERNS OF SONOGRAPHIC FINDINGS IN ADULT PATIENTS WITH ACUTE APPENDICITIS

Abstract

Background: Acute appendicitis is one of the most common causes of abdominal pain requiring emergency surgery in adults. Accurate and timely diagnosis is crucial to avoid complications such as perforation and peritonitis. Sonography, being a non-invasive and readily available imaging modality, plays a significant role in the evaluation of suspected acute appendicitis. This study aims to identify and analyze the patterns of sonographic findings in adult patients diagnosed with acute appendicitis.

Methods: A retrospective study was conducted, reviewing the sonographic reports of adult patients who presented with clinical symptoms suggestive of acute appendicitis. The study included patients from multiple healthcare facilities over a defined period. The sonographic findings were categorized based on features such as appendiceal diameter, wall thickening, presence of periappendiceal fluid, and appendicoliths. The sensitivity and specificity of sonography in diagnosing acute appendicitis were also assessed.
