STUDENTS’ VARIABLES AND THEIR PERCEIVED DIFFICULTIES IN LEARNING MECHANICAL TECHNOLOGY
ABSTRACT
This study was carried out in order to determine students’ variables and their perceived difficulties in learning mechanical technology.
It was born out of the fact that development in the teaching and learning of mechanical technology has been neglected. The investigation so far carried out covers four secondary schools in the locality.
The findings were based on four basic research questions.
- Lack of laboratories and lack of instructional materials
- Students attitude towards the subject (mechanical technology) affects their performance
- Teachers teaching methods in mechanical technology affect students performance
- Teachers qualification also affect the students’ performance in mechanical technology,
From the research question it was discovered that the following factors-absence of laboratories and lack of instructional materials limited and incompetent teachers of the subject were found to be responsible for the inefficient teaching of mechanical technology in schools.

INTRODUCTION
BACKGROUND TO THE STUDY
When we look around we cannot but admire the work of science and technology as the clothes we put on, the house we lives in, the pen use in writhing, the cooker we watch, the steer we play, the pipe borne water, the motor car we drive, the medicine we drink, the are propane that flies, the book we read, the chalk we write with, the industries we work in, the electricity we use e.t.c

Nigeria as a developing nation is not exempted from the for industrialization despite the country’s buoyancy in mineral resources, she is still learning from countries like united kingdom and united state of America the society is productively hand capped by low level of technology, yet Nigeria has a high taste for luxuries, hence cannot but learn from developed countries for commodes this so because she lack scientific inventions this has gone a long way to hamper the countries economic growth over the years in search of economical and technological satisfaction, Nigeria now encourages the study of mechanical technology anf technology in schools
The national policy on education is now geared towards reflecting the nation need science and technology is important in our modern industries, it is fundamental to boldly and mental health it has revolutionaries our look on the universe, it has freed us from haunting fears and has influence our fundamental philosophies according to Abubakar (1972) “the pursuit of science and technology is imperative for any nation that want to maintain its independence and sovereignty, ensure growing prosperity and hold up its ahead among civilized nations” science and technology has come to stay in this country but the way and manner it is taught has a lot to do in teaching any particular subjects a number of strategies or methodology are often employed according to Thompson (1962) “teaching are those techniques used by the teacher as the most efficient means of achieving the teaching goals”
In the Nigeria national policy on education (1981) it stated that school education should “equip students to live attentively in our modern age of mechanical technology and technology” in accordance with this aim of education, Boge (1979) has his to say, “in an era that is most accurately described by its scientific and technological process, one major educational problem is preparing the young people to cope with the intellectual and cultural environment characterized by rapid changes” in order for students to understand this rapidly, scientific and technological society, it is assumed that these young people should have some basic understanding for the mechanical technology
Experimental mechanical technology is one of the most recently included subject content of the curriculum mechanical technology it inclusion, mechanical technology has continued to occupy its separate place and some time, it is often neglected in some schools even where the various branches of mechanical technology are taught they are done without regard for the basic requirement needed in spite of the effort made during the present decade by the federal and state government of Nigeria to give mechanical technology subject their role in education note much has been achieved in some selected schools in Lagos east senatorial district of Lagos state the effect of the deficiency in teaching mechanical technology in schools are particularly evident in developing countries such as Nigeria
STATEMENT OF PROBLEM
- To which extent has the number of students per class in Nigeria which is too unwieldy affect the effective teaching of mechanical technology
- In what way does in adequate use of specimens material and diagrams makes ineffective the teaching of mechanical technology
- Could lack of improvised teaching and by teacher cause ineffective teaching which lead to the students poor performance in mechanical technology
- Can bad attitude of teachers towards work affect the effective teaching of mechanical technology
- Could lack of practical work causes ineffective teaching of mechanical technology

HYPOTHESIS
The ineffective teaching of mechanical technology schools is brought by several factors the researcher has it in mind that the factors listed below could be responsible for it

- Students attitude towards the subject (mechanical technology) affects their performance
- Teacher’s qualification also affect the students performance in mechanical technology
- Teacher’s teaching method in mechanical technology affect students performance
- With answers to the above, the researcher has it in mind that there is going to be a total change in the teaching of mechanical technology
PURPOSE OF STUDY
The purpose of this study is to find out the problem militating against the teaching of mechanical technology the schools
SIGNIFICANCE OF STUDY
The teaching of mechanical technology has not been as effective as it output to be is easily of students in schools it is therefore necessary to diagnose the various factors responsible for this unheeding state of affairs and proper means by which the anomalies could be arrested
The importance of mechanical technology in the life of man need to be over emphasized therefore if the subject is note effectively taught, the rudiment that are necessary for development of the basic concept of mechanical technology would be lacking at the secondary schools level and this could permeate the other state of the nation’s educational level it is believed that the importance of mechanical technology is well under stood and all the factors responsible for it’s unhealthy development are quickly nipped on the bud it would be possible to build a mechanical technology culture oriented society which will augur well for the healthy development of the nation
SCOPE AND DELIMITION OF STUDY
The study will be restricted to Lagos east senatorial district in Lagos state a large number of secondary school is located there hence Lagos east senatorial district will serve as the centre of the study this will enable one to know the factor militating against effective teaching of mechanical technology
Selected secondary schools in Lagos east senatorial districtare to be used for the study
LIMITATION OF STUDY
To carry out a project such as this there are bound to be procedural and methodological flew inherent in the item developed human biases are likely to aggravate the internal weakness that are likely to exist however, conscious effort will be made to evolve method that will control for such extraneous influences in order to ensure the validity and reliability of the study
It is also expected that distance, times, finance and lack of human co-operation can pose serious threats to the successful execution of this project to this end it is hoped that every effort will be made to minimize, if not totally eliminating such threats and steps taken be highlighted to serve as a guide to those who may wish to replicate the project

During the course of reviewing difference literature, it was gathered that in effective teaching of mechanical technology in caused by many factor which will be discussed in this chapter
IRREGULARRITY AND UNPUTUALITY TO CLASS
Farrant (1964) has this to say weakness with regards to regularity and punctuality is indicative of poor efficient and lack of recognition of the value of time to end this teacher’s parent and guardians should show good examples of regularity in their daily activities to enable students emulate them. Some teachers are responsible for pupil’s incessant irregular attendance due to their application of obsolete method and poor classroom environment since the above can make students perform poorly, the teacher therefore should try and encourage the students to be regular at school
NEGLACTING OF PRACTICAL WORK IN MECHANICAL TECHNOLOGY
Adeyemo (1965) point out that the importance of the use of concrete object in practical work is that batter under standing of the subject is ensured the materials he stress should be suitable to the pupil’s age and class as children remember 10 % of what they see and 90 % of what they hear see and do the teacher should therefore use practical methods whenever they are teaching mechanical technology subjects Samo (1963) asserts that a good number of teachers forget to indicate the relevance of what they are trying to teach to what obtain in actual life many sure what they are teaching is relevant to what exist in actual life
LACK OF PEOPLE ATTENTION AT HOME
Obaya (1980) say” one of the problems facing effective teaching of mechanical technology in school is the child’s home, which may make it impossible for the child to meet certain demands of the school, such coming to school on time, buying the necessary books and during home work” since parent share a part in the students poor performance because of non-availability of materials by their children, lack of proper attention at home which amount to neglect they should turn new least hand have the education of their children in mind and provide learning material for them and devote time for them at home this would enhance effective teaching’s
ATTITUDE OF HEADMASTER, TEACHERAND PUPIL TOWARDS THE TEACHING OF MECHANICAL TECHNOLOGY
Teacher bad attitude towards work can cause detective teaching according to graladamic (1986) “instead of teaching what they were hide to teach the teachers engage them serves in bringing certain foreign ideals neither truly educate nor properly understand “he says if the situation is not arrested our in situation of learning would be nothing but a breeding place for robots teachers should try and have good attitude toward teaching so that the children will have interest in the subject, which they teach
The attitude of students toward mechanical technology has always being a great concern to many academicians according to Bajpai (1973) “many children have a great fear of mechanical technology they find it very Ugly and unpleasing” “I have no head for mechanical technology has become a common saying” hence student are scared of mechanical technology and they prefer other subject such as anxieties and fear in mechanical technology needed to be corrected according to Okorofor (1985) “some head master were in the habit of hearing their staff and students to room about aimlessly with the results that teachers hardly write their lesson notes and keep other records while the school building doors, window and furniture were uncared for” he then warned that any teacher who value his position must not be prepared to make sacrifices, to stop the above problem in schools, the head master should ensure that there is good super vision which will make bit the teaches and students do their work effectively Kamalun (1986) has this to say “the falling standard of our present educational set up has been attributed to work by some teachers in the teaching profession “since the teachers bad attitude to work make students perform poorly, the teacher should ensure that he work for the betterment of the students”
UNIQUALIFIED TEACHER AND SHORTAGE OF MECHANICAL TECHNOLOGY EQUIPMENT
Ogunubiyi in his book secondary school mechanical technology and method A. C.E series (1981) pointed out that “in the first instance many teacher of mechanical technology are not trained and source of the trained ones use lecture method which makes the students passive listeners” the above support the view that bad method of teaching does not aid effective learning and so the students performance will be poor
Prebale (1960) says “the failure of mechanical technology teachers to provide better explanation is traceable to lack of concept and research equipment” this could be due to shortage or mechanical technology equipment in our schools textbook and other printed materials for mechanical technology teaching are very much inadequate in our mechanical technology teachers
Macbeth (1974) observed that learners active more when teacher allow them to manipulate apparatus rather them when they simply observe and listen mechanical technology is mustered by “doing” doing involves the students carrying out the experiments them serves it have been found by many researchers that shortage of mechanical technology equipment in the laboratory have adverse effect on students performance in the subject generally performance in the subject generally
TECHING PROFFESSION NOT BEEN MOTIVATED
The teachers feel not motivated hence the frequent strike by teachers in many states of the federation the teacher of mechanical technology most of the time are not able to give better explanation of the lesson they teach because the necessary materials to school to help save the situation Okonkwo (1985) emphasize” the preparedness of the association (STAN) to explore alienable human an material resources toward the up dating of mechanical technology teaching in the country
He enlighten that non payment of mechanical technology teacher allowances, saying that in other state, allowance is not only paid regularly but along with the teachers salaries” the teacher should be motivated so as to make meaningful contribution toward the development of mechanical technology and technology in the country the decline in mechanical technology courses calls for serious concern to both the individual and the government
Onazi (1987) has this to say “decline in the number of application for pure mechanical technology courses in Nigeria universities is a course for serious concern he stress that this trend of event is a major setback when compared to over 1,000 candidate admitted for low in university this year he regrets that this state of affaires would have negative effect on the future development of this country which he says needed much concern for mechanical technology and technological break through”
Olurin another development says striving to fulfill its obligation to teacher performance some of them where below expectation he says they have not exhibited the level of commitment the state government would have to see in a group of its worker he further says the government expects absolute loyalty, devotion to duty and high standard of performance from it workers” teacher should endeavour to maintain performance in term of the stand and expected of them
Ekeli (1986) implores that in this country, the teacher and the teaching profession and cloyed with the poor and reckless attitude of various administration disfigurement of the personality of the Nigeria teachers has made it unavoidable for whoever confronts him to ask if Nigerians and their rulers are ever interested in the character of the man whose responsibility its to mound the mind, of the future lenders of this country
From above it is gathered that teacher are not motivated hence there are some unexpected attitude from them.
NO PROPER PLANNING OF LESSON
Nsaka (1984) say that “the research of all good teaching is sound planning it is difficult to a teacher to perform effectively in the classroom without proper preparation this support the researcher’s view than some teachers lack proper planning of lesson or notes of lesson they fail to follow the syllabus and plan ahead for the students which result to in effective teaching, it is not only the teacher that has to plan for the students the educat6ional planner have a part to play the students poor performance in mechanical technology due to poor teaching
Oyakhilonme (1986) implores “education planners and managers in the country to involve a workable programme that would for ever lay the ghost of falling standard in education to risk he further sys this could be done by examine the nations educational standard and academic angles”
At this state of affair the body is responsible for education planning should do every thing possible to plan education according to the students agrees and ability.
NO PROVISION OF INCENTAIVE TO BOTH PUPIL AND TEACHER
For there to be effective teaching of mechanical technology and also to have good performance from students there should be incentives to both the teacher and the students “Ochapa (1987) called for the re-introduction of special incentive to mechanical technologys teachers and students so as to check the imbalance between art and mechanical technology students population
He further stressed on the decline in the number of students taking mechanical technology courses, the vice chancellor suggested the re-introduction of payment of special allowance to mechanical technology teachers and the award of school unship to students offering mechanical technology based courses to stem the trend if the above is followed there is going to be a changes in the performance in mechanical technology
SUMMARY OF LITERATURE
Conclusively there should be fund made available for the perchance of mechanical technology material so that there will be effective teaching of mechanical technology in schools in 1977 Olawole suggested the promulgation of a degree establishing a mechanical technology fund for the purpose of research into mechanical technology and technology
Research should be carried out locally by Nigeria to enable them contribute to the development of indigenous scientific and technology capacity the government should always make the fund really for schools so as to check and correct the in effective teaching coupled which poor performance in mechanical technology in our schools.
CHAPTER THREE
METHODOLOGY
DESIGN OF THE STUDY
This chapter examines and explains the research and methodology under the following headings: sampling produce, sampling population, research instrument, data collection and data analysis.
SAMPLING PROCEDURE
Four secondary schools here randomly selected among the number of schools in Lagos east senatorial districtof Lagos state.
SAMPLING POPULATION
The subjects used in this study were drawn from some selected schools in Lagos senatorial district Local Government Area, in which a total number of one hundred teachers were sample from four schools and twenty-five teachers from each school.
The name and location of the schools is displayed in the table.

RESEARCH INSTRUMENT
The questionnaire was constructed by the researcher in order to reflect the purpose of the study and the statement of problem. The researcher’s supervisor scrutinized, approved and certified then whether or not they contain adequate and relevant questions formulated in order to ascertain their content validity.
DATA COLLECTIONS
The questionnaire used to gather deals will be personally administered to the respondents who are assured of the confidence of their answer. They will be encourage to answer the questions the best way they could on their own as it was not a test proposed to discover how intelligent they were, but for a research project.
DATA ANALYSIS
The method to be used in analyzing data collection is simple percentage and table the computation of simple percentage was done by using the

The data shown in the above table indicated that 79% of the children home background contributed to the poor performance in elementary mechanical technology while 21% indicated that children home background does not contribute the poor performance of elementary mechanical technology in schools. However it can be indicated that majority of the children home background contribute to the poor performance of elementary mechanical technology in schools.

The above table shown that 98% of the teachers indicated that the ministry of education does not organize any in-service training for mechanical technology teachers while 2% of the teachers indicated that the ministry of education organizes in-service training for mechanical technology teachers. However it shown that the ministry of education does not organized in service training for mechanical technology teachers.

The table 20 above shown that 94% indicated that lack of qualified mechanical technology teachers can affect the teaching of mechanical technology while 6% indicated that lack of qualified mechanical technology teachers cannot affect the teaching of mechanical technology. This therefore shows that lack of qualified mechanical technology teachers definitely can affect the teaching of mechanical technology.
SUMMARY OF ANALYSIS OF DATA
The data obtained from the respondents actually revealed that the factors identified by the researcher militating against the affective teaching of mechanical technology. The contrast between the Yes and No responses for the different variable attest to the teachers that such problem are in line with profounder statement of problems.
From the data collected it can be seen that students are very much interested in studying mechanical technology, because of lack of laboratory and instructional materials to aids in the effective teaching of mechanical technology, teaching will be in abstraction. This making such a teacher not to make the much desire impact on the students. This research reveals that our secondary schools in Lagos east senatorial districtare not well equipped with adequate equipment and qualified and experience teachers. This has led to the poor performance of students in secondary schools.
Finally it is also seen in this research that lack of practical work, bad attitude of teachers and lack of improvised teaching and has resulted to ineffective teaching of mechanical technology.
CHAPTER FIVE
FINDINGS RECOMMENDATION AND CONCLUSION
This study was designed to find out the factors militating against the effective teaching of mechanical technology in schools (Lagos east senatorial districtin perspective)
The following factor in absence of laboratories and lack of instructional materials, limited were incompetent teachers of the subject were found to be responsible for the inefficient teaching of mechanical technology in schools.
RECOMMENDATION
As a result of the finding made by the researcher the following recommendations would go a long way to improving the teaching of mechanical technology in schools the government should endeavour to provide all the schools with laboratory well equipped with enough instructional materials which will enhance the teaching of practical concepts of mechanical technology subject, more teachersshould be specially trainedthrough in service training this will then increase the number of mechanical technology teachers who are competent enough to handle the subject. The policy makers should appoint individuals that are qualified to plan the curriculum and mechanical technology oriented supervisor andinspectors. To examine the effectiveness of teaching of mechanical technology in schools, teacher should also be encouraged by regular payment of their salaries and giving of incentives.
Finally if all the above recommendation are implemented there will be increased in the performance of students and improvement in the teaching of mechanical technology in schools.
CONCLUSION
On the basis of the finding in this study it could be concluded that there is a poor performance in the teaching of mechanical technology in most of the schools in Lagos east senatorial districtof Lagos state.
This poor condition was as a result of absence of laboratory and lack of instructional materials, limited and incompetents teachers of the subject and short coming on the part of educational; policy making body.
Students negatives attitude to learning was not found to be a determining factor affecting the effective teaching of mechanical technology in schools because most of the teachers agreed that the students were very much interested in learning mechanical technology despite the poor condition of learning the found themselves.
